She immigrated to America with her second son and her second husband, hoping to build a better future. But her journey was not the typical immigrant success story. She had left her eldest son behind with her ex-husband back home. That decision was not easy. Like many immigrants, she had to make difficult choices between family, opportunity, and survival. She came to America knowing that building a new life would require sacrifice. My aunt worked two jobs. She worked hard to establish herself in a new country, learning English while working in DSW Shoe Store and Marshalls. She worked hard to establish herself in a new country, learn how to live as an American, and eventually achieve things she could be proud of: owning a car and a house is not an easy task for a 41 year old Chinese mother with no knowledge of English. She had to navigate everything by herself and keep up with the constant changing world, from getting pay through check and changing to getting pay online. But there was always another part of her life that remained connected to home. Her eldest son eventually came to America to visit. She hoped her eldest son will stay and find opportunities here. However, he came to visit twice and then give up his residence permit. While her second son after experiencing life in the US for 10 years, during middle school years until college, he decided that he did not want to stay too. He returned to his home country. My aunt, however, remained in America for more than 20 years. Pandemic and the near death experience made her finally made another major decision. She went home too. Going home is not always as simple as it sounds. After all, isn’t it home? Knowing the streets and languages But spending decades in another country changes a person. The country you left may have changed. Your hometown may have changed. Government systems, healthcare, banking, housing, transportation, technology, and everyday life may all work differently than you remember. And for an older adult, these changes can become overwhelming. That’s where my personal experience come My aunt’s journey helped me understand something important. Translation is not simply about changing Chinese words into English words or English words into Chinese words. For an older person, translation can mean helping them understand what is happening around them. It means helping them understand a document before signing it. It means helping them overcome technology problems like using a smart phone to take a short video, picture or signing an electronic signature. And sometimes, it simply means having someone patient and trustworthy who can help explain things clearly. That is why I want to use my language skills and personal understanding the immigrant experience to help Chinese seniors who are retiring or returning to their home country after many years abroad. I want to be someone who helps bridge the gap between cultures, generations and countries. My aunt’s story reminds me that home can mean different things at different stages of our lives. In her 40s, her home means to live the American Dream of owning a car and house while having her kid be educated in America. Now fast forward into her 70s, her home means to live close to her family and in a country where she can speak her native language. And wherever home may be, no senior should have to feel lost in this journey or finding a retirement home.
