豆豉妈妈
豆豉妈妈 Douchimama. 豆豉 (douchi) in Chinese means small black fermented beans, which means small, tiny or petite. 妈妈 (mama) in Chinese means mom.
My grandma gave me this nickname, 豆豉(black tiny bean). My grandma was born and raised in Chaoshan (潮山), a southern region in China. In Chinese culture, we are given nicknames because of our physical size or our personality.
Born in 1983, my family and I immigrated from Hong Kong to New York City in 1991. I have selective memories of my childhood when living in Hong Kong. These memories of Hong Kong had evolved and resonate in my motherhood. My parents cooking every night in Chinatown NYC had shaped my motherhood. I love to cook for my kids.
My dad said “病从口入”。 Sickness comes from what you eat. If I want my kids to be healthy, I need to feed my kids home cook meal. Not all my meals are 100% whole food or vegan. My dishes are simple, easy and kids approved.
In my years of experience with kids, I learn to connect with kids first and then use food to build relationships.
I hope you guys will join my journey to explore food and life together. ENJOY!
